Who is the creator of the statue?

The author of the monument is Czech sculptor Jaroslav Róna, one of the most prominent contemporary Czech artists. The statue was unveiled in 2003 and has since become one of the most photographed modern works of art in Prague.

The bronze sculpture stands nearly four meters tall and weighs approximately 800 kilograms.

Why is Kafka sitting on the shoulders of a headless giant?

The inspiration came from Kafka's early short story Description of a Struggle.

The story features a man carrying another person on his shoulders. Jaroslav Róna transformed this strange scene into a bronze statue that is now one of the symbols of Prague.

Everyone tries to determine the single correct interpretation. Some see in it a conflict between mind and body. Others a symbol of human identity. Still others a reminder of the sense of alienation that permeates almost all of Kafka's work.
